The great thing about living in Miami is that there’s ALWAYS something to do – and this time of year is especially busy!

Check out some of the super-hot events on the calendar in May and June:

 

MAY IS MIAMI MUSEUM MONTH

During the entire month, residents and visitors can take advantage of the “buy one, get one free” admission policy at some two dozen participating museums – some of which include the Deering Estate, the Ancient Spanish Monastery, the Art Deco Museum, the Rubell Family Collection, the Gold Coast Railroad Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Dexta DappsMAY 28/BEST OF THE BEST CONCERT

An array of hip-hop, reggae and pop musical acts will bring alive Bayfront Park during Memorial Day weekend at this must-see outdoor event. Acts scheduled to appear include I-Octane, Mavado, Dexta Daps, Chris Martin and Lyrikal, among others. Gates open at 2 p.m.

Bruce BruceMAY 28/10TH ANNUAL MEMORIAL WEEKEND COMEDY FESTIVAL

Get ready to spend the night laughing at the James L. Knight Center with comedians Bruce Bruce, Bill Bellamy, Luenell, DC Young Fly, Lavar Walker and Malik S. The yuks start rolling at 8 p.m.

Miami Film MonthJUNE IS MIAMI FILM MONTH

During the entire month, residents and visitors can take advantage of the $8 admission price at participating art theaters (Bill Cosford Cinema, O Cinema and Miami Beach Cinematheque, among them), as well as learn about the details of various Miami film festivals that will be taking place later in the year.

Summer ShortsJUNE 1-JULY 2/CITY THEATRE SUMMER SHORTS

Sure, you love going to the theater – but maybe you don’t have the time to sit through a two- or three-hour play. Well, here’s your answer: The Adrienne Arsht Center-Carnival Studio Theater is the only theater in the U.S. dedicated to showcasing 10-minute plays for folks of all ages. During the summer, this is the ideal way to introduce your youngsters to the joys of live theater – and still make it home in time to cook dinner!

JUNE 3-4/FLORIDA CHAMPIONSHIP CUP SERIES

Headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, the Championship Cup Series is a 30-plus-year-old circuit for Sportsman Level motorcycle road racing. When it makes its summertime stop at Homestead-Miami Speedway, both seasoned riders and beginning competitors will be welcomed – giving participants and spectators, alike, the opportunity to enjoy the thrills of racing in a fun, safety-conscious atmosphere.

Coral Gables restaurant weekJUNE 5-25/CORAL GABLES RESTAURANT WEEK

Head to Downtown Coral Gables for its 10th Annual Coral Gables Restaurant Week (which lasts three weeks!) – a gastronomic treat for all foodies who want the chance to sample the fare from more than 40 participating eateries. The nearly month-long event, which grows bigger every year, is put on by the Business Improvement District of Coral Gables. Bon appetite!

JUNE 6-10/TASTE OF THE CARIBBEAN

For nearly 25 years, this annual event brings together the best chefs and culinary teams to learn, create, demonstrate their skills and invite the public to partake in the countless delicacies that comprise Caribbean cuisine. From the Bahamas and Trinidad & Tobago to Barbados, Jamaica, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Aruba and all the other island nations, the Caribbean’s finest restaurateurs will be on hand at the Hyatt Regency Miami serving up their delectable creations. Be sure not to miss it!

Orange Bowl Paddle ChampionshipJUNE 10/ORANGE BOWL PADDLE CHAMPIONSHIP

Taking place at Miami Marine Stadium Flexpark in Key Biscayne, the OBPC will welcome nearly 400 participants (elite, recreational, corporate teams – even kids!) and thousands of spectators at this unique competition. The top three male and female finishers for both the 12-foot-6-inch and 14-foot boards will receive cash prizes, and all funds raised by the event will benefit the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami to fund mentorship programs around the county.

Summer Fruit FestivalJUNE 10-11/REDLAND SUMMER FRUIT FESTIVAL

Hey, who doesn’t love fresh fruit – especially in the summertime! – right?! Well, the fruit doesn’t get any sweeter or fresher than it does this weekend down at Fruit & Spice Park in Homestead. Festival goers will have the chance to sample not only tropical fruits sold by local growers, but also rare fruit tastings, local wines and other cuisine in the exhibitors’ booths.

JUNE 14-18/AMERICAN BLACK FILM FESTIVAL

Billing itself as “one of the coolest film festivals in the world,” this showcase for African-American talent will celebrate the black show business stars of today and tomorrow with a weeklong bonanza of events on Miami Beach. And trust us – there’s something for everyone! Whether you love watching or making movies, or are looking to break into the business, or just want to revel in the creative process, there are seminars, advanced classes, panel discussions and a host of programs being offered the ABFF’s Careers in Entertainment Center. Oh, and the lineup of premieres and screenings is impressive – especially the opening night film: the world premiere of “Girls Trip” starring Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tiffany Hadish and Regina Hall.

JUNE 22/NEW TIMES BEST OF MIAMI PARTY

The good folks at this popular alt weekly have been doing their “Best of Miami” selections for 30 years – so this year’s bash at the newly opened Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science is sure to be epic! With the “Best of Miami” issue publishing on June 15, attendees will be able to meet and mingle with (and in some cases even sample the wares of) the hundreds of winners in the vast multitude of categories.
